Tim Miano is co-founder of SP@CE, an "innovation infrastructure company" founded in Charlottesville, VA in 2014. SP@CE successfully designed and implemented the project to redevelop the Main Street Arena into a 140,000 sq.ft. hub for technology and entrepreneurship through a business partnership with Jaffray Woodriff.

This project resulted from several years leading an effort to build a large-scale effort to build an "innovation district" in Downtown Charlottesville, or "a centrally located innovation hub ... critical to the success of the innovation economy in Charlottesville." [1] SP@CE also "works with the investment community to build a large-scale innovation district to meet the demands of the next-generation of problem solvers." [2]

After forming a business venture announced during Tom Tom's 2016 festival, in October 2016, local hedgefund manager Jaffray Woodriff announced that he and Tim Miano were "actively working to build—in the figurative and literal senses—an Innovation District that will revolutionize the way great ideas are fostered in Charlottesville." [3]

In December 2016, speculative plans for the creation of SP@CE's proposed innovation district at the current site of the Main Street Arena were confirm. [4]

In 2017, plans for the development of the site began to be announced. [5]

Tim Miano is the co-founder and Chief Executive Invention Officer of SP@CE. A Virginia native, Tim attended the University of Virginia, obtaining degrees in Physics and Mathematics. With an interest in the creation of technology-based startups, he began working with Matthew Slaats and Adalie Pierce-McManamon in 2014 toward developing a Technology & Arts Flexspace, Incubator, & Accelerator, and soon after, they created a formal proposal for a major “Innovation District” custom built for Charlottesville. In June 2014, SP@CE was officially added to UVa’s iLab. [7]

In November 2014, while speaking on a CBIC panel, Miano announced ongoing development plans for "a $10-20 million 'resource aggregator and innovation accelerator.'" He also called for the creation of a partnership made up of "the stakeholders of an ‘innovation ecosystem’ including entrepreneurs, funders or high net worth individuals, the government, the community, the university, and large corporations to join forces in solving what he thinks is a 'well understood issue' and one that is 'entirely solvable.'"[8]

In April 2015, Mike Signer announced his support of SP@CE's efforts to build "innovation infrastructure" and an "innovation district" in Charlottesville, and "called for city government to put its past studies on economic opportunities into action and to get directly involved in the creation of a new business incubator and accelerator, as well as with the designation of an innovation district." [9] SP@CE's plans included the creation of "flexible and abundant downtown office space" accessible to both "for-profit and nonprofit entrepreneurs." [10]

In April 2016, SP@CE began coordinating a series of meetings with community leaders in Charlottesville, VA. At that time, Miano and local hedgefund manager Jaffray Woodriff began actively working together "to build—in the figurative and literal senses—an Innovation District that will revolutionize the way great ideas are fostered in Charlottesville."
