SolUnesco is a renewable energy company based in Reston, Virginia.

The company currently hopes to build a 11-megawatt photovoltaic solar energy generation system in Albemarle County. The solar farm would be located off the Thomas Jefferson Parkway.[1]

A zoning text amendment, however, would be required for the company to move forward with its plans because Albemarle's zoning ordinance does not include energy generation as a permitted use in the county's rural areas.[1]

In April, the Board of Supervisors approved a resolution of intent to consider an amendment to the zoning ordinance and directed the Planning Commission to hold a public hearing.[2] The Albemarle County Planning Commission endorsed the zoning text amendment on May 23.[1] The Board of Supervisors vote on the amendment in June, allowing solar energy systems a permitted use in the rural areas with a special-use permit.
