Ruth Marion Nolan
Ruth Marion Nolan, preferring the moniker Marion Nolan, was founder, CEO and Chair of the board of the Charlottesville Albemarle Foundation for the Encouragement of the Arts.[1]
Biography
Nolan was born in Toronto, Canada in 1933. She later immigrated to the United States and attended George Washington University. While there, she first met her husband, Stan, whose graduate studies first drew Nolan to Charlottesville. In 1968 Nolan returned to Charlottesville after her husband joined the faculty of the University of Virginia. She died in 2011.[1]
Arts Advocacy
A lover of all forms of art, Nolan was shocked into action at the lack of visual or performing arts curricula at area schools. After organizing visits by artists of various stripes to these schools, she decided to institutionalize this force for cultural enrichment by founding the Charlottesville Albemarle Foundation for the Encouragement of the Arts in 1976. This nonprofit organization aimed to promote the arts in local schools and throughout the community.[1]
While serving as CEO and Chair of the board for CHALFA, brought performers ranging from the Vienna Boys Choir to Sir Ian McKellen to Charlottesville and helped underwrite arts programs in the city and county school systems. She retired in 1996.[1]
