M.A. Cohen

M.A. Cohen was a Charlottesville businessman who unsuccessfully ran for City Council in 1960. He was the owner of Kaufman's Sons Clothing Store.

Biography

Cohen was born in Louisville, Kentucky and received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1933. He moved to Charlottesville in 1935 and became a salesman at Kaufman's. He became a partner in 1942 and an owner in 1954. Cohen served as a member of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Library Board from 1953 to 1957. He was vice president of the Community Chest in 1947 and 1948 and the organization's president in 1949 and 1950. His wife was Edna Fisher and they had two daughters. His address in 1960 was 1221 Rugby Road. In 1955, Cohen was president of the Retail Merchants Association.

Primary election

Cohen sought the Democratic nomination on a three-man slate with Carl B. Deane and S. Dexter Forbes. They made their announcement in early January 1960. [1] Cohen was 47 art the time of the announcement.
