For years, some in the community have been pursuing the idea of a flash-freeze facility to assist local farmers as well as providing career-ladder jobs to those who need them.

In 2014, Albemarle County and Charlottesville received a Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development from the state of Virginia to craft a business plan for a flash-freeze facility. [1] This work built on a preliminary study that had been conducted by the Jefferson Board for Aging as a way to provide precooked meals for seniors.

A second grant, obtained in coordination with the City of Charlottesville through match of $17,500), provided funding for a feasibility study to research operation costs and market analysis for a light processing and Flash Freezing Hub for Virginia-grown produce. Preliminary feasibility results were shared with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in July, 2015. Following the completed report, the project management team will be considering the next steps in bringing this project forward.[citation needed]
