The Blue Ridge Mountains run through Western Albemarle County. They provide a wide range of recreational opportunities such as hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and skiing.
The early Albemarle County inhabitant Michael Woods Sr. was widely believed to have been the first white settler along the eastern foot of the mountains in Virginia, making his home near the eastern mouth of Wood's Gap (later renamed Jarmans Gap after a grandson of William Jarman purchased the land).
