There was an election in Charlottesville in 1958 that elected two members of City Council. Today’s heavy voting in the city was attributed to interest in the new voting machines; a movement in support of Dr. Louise O.Wensel, Sen. Harry F. Byrd’s opponent, in protest of public school closings under Virginia’s “mass resistance” laws; and counter-efforts to get out the Democratic vote in a show-of-confidence for Byrd.[1]
