Moormans River runs through Rural Area 1, the north-western portion of Albemarle County. Flowing for approximately 14.3 miles and containing an elevation of 122 meters (400 feet), it eventually feeds into Mechums River. Sugar Hollow Dam and Sugar Hollow Reservoir lie along the route of this river.

The river was named after Charles Moorman, who in 1735 patented 400 acres (1.6 km2) of land in what was then Goochland County, at the junction of the Mechum and Moorman rivers. In 1748, Daniel Maupin Sr. obtained a patent for land on the river, purchasing it from Thomas Moorman. In 1988, a portion of the river from the reservoir to the confluence was designated by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation as a scenic river.[1]

The correct spelling is without an apostrophe.
