VITA at Virginia Law is a student organization at the UVa School of Law[1] in Charlottesville, VA and is part of an IRS-sponsored program that provides free tax preparation services to lower-income households.[2]
Background
VITA at Virginia Law has been active since at least 2007, and is made up of unpaid law student volunteers.[3] In 2011, VITA at Virginia Law saved taxpayers nearly an estimated $100,000 in tax preparation fees that those taxpayers would have otherwise had to pay a tax preparer.[4]
Leadership
VITA at Virginia Law is led by a Managing Board made up of between five to seventeen law student officers who hold office for a term not-to-exceed one year.[5]

Partnerships
VITA at Virginia Law collaborates closely with the CASH program at Madison House to provide free tax preparation services to taxpayers.[7] VITA at Virginia Law is also a member of the Jefferson Area EITC Coalition.[8]
Requirements
VITA at Virginia Law requires that taxpayers meet certain requirements in order to qualify for VITA at Virginia Law's free tax preparation services.
The requirements for Tax Year 2010 are listed below:[9]
- U.S. citizen/national or resident for tax purposes
- Proof of identification (passport, driver's license, etc.)
- Valid Social Security Numbers (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN)
- Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) less than or equal to $50,000
- Income earned by a spouse counts towards AGI if you choose to file Married - Filing Jointly
- Do not receive rental income
- Cannot prepare a state income tax return without preparing a federal income tax return
- In addition to a federal income tax return, can also prepare up to two state income tax returns
- Additional requirements may apply
Locations
VITA at Virginia Law's primary tax preparation site is located at UVa Human Resources' Michie Building North located at 918 Emmet Street North, Charlottesville, VA, 22903.[10] Since 2011, taxpayers can schedule an appointment online, in addition to scheduling an appointment by phone.[11]
