Charlottesville City Council unanimously endorsed the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement in July 2006.[1]

Albemarle County Board of Supervisors endorsed a similar resolution, the Cool Counties initiative in December 2007 that commits the County to a goal of reducing carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050, or an average annual reductions of 2 percent. [2]
