Thrimston Hern was a second-generation slave laborer at Monticello who is believed to have laid the cornerstone at the University of Virginia in 1817. He was purchased by an Arthur Brockenbrough three years after Jefferson's death and Brockenbrough was paid for the work that Hern performed.
