"The Junction" was the intersection of the Southern (north-south) and C&O (east-west) rail lines in Charlottesville, still present today. This created four separate quadrants, which segmented later development. The four areas included one centered around the University of Virginia, downtown Charlottesville, a segregated area occupied by black residents, and an undeveloped section[1].
