The Hook was a free weekly newspaper distributed on Thursdays that covered Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Hawes Spencer was the founder and editor from February 2002 to January 2013. [1] The publication was owned by Better Publications LLC[2].
In 2011, The Hook merged with rival publication C-ville Weekly.[3] The weekly ceased publication after its September 26, 2013 issue. [4] The archives suddenly disappeared the Internet after they were sold to a third-party who then deleted the website. After news coverage in the Washington Post, an anonymous group restored the website using a .net address.

Spencer founded The Hook after he was removed from the editor's post at the C-VILLE Weekly[5]. The first issue was published on February 7, 2002.
Blair Kelly, a partner with Better Publications, attributed the closure is related to "business and editorial perspectives." [6]
