  • 1862Civil War; Battle of South Mountain: Colonel John Bowie Strange (VMI Class of 1842) was mortally wounded and Lieutenant M. J. Shepherd of Company B was killed. The 19th Virginia Infantry Regiment lost 63 of the 150 men it brought into action. Captain John L. Cocharan took command of the regiment with the fall of Colonel Strange.
  • 1892The Daily Progress newspaper was founded by James Hubert Lindsay and his brother Frank Lindsay. The Progress was initially published six days a week; the first Sunday edition was printed in September 1968. The Lindsay's family owned the paper for 78 years.
