- 1865 – Civil War: Major General Philip H. Sheridan's expedition of nearly 10,000 Union soldiers departed Charlottesville. The destruction of Scottsville began at 3 p.m.
- 1917 – Benjamin Tonsler, for nearly 30 years the principal of the Jefferson Graded School, (later named the Jefferson School), died of pneumonia at his home after an illness of less than a week. Tonsler was from the last generation of black American educators born into slavery.
