March 3:

  • 1865 – General Custer advanced on Charlottesville. Upon his arrival he was met by the mayor and other prominent citizens, who surrendered the town to him. Troops from Sheridan's Union Army of the Shenandoah encamped for three day in many sections of the town including Belmont, Park Street and what is now Locust Grove.
  • 2016 – After 89 years of business on the Downtown Mall and elsewhere in the area, the Young Men’s Shop announces it will close in the spring.
