- 1869 – Tobacconist, merchant, and railroad investor Samuel Miller died at his residence in Campbell county, VA (aged 76). Born from poverty in Albemarle County, he become one of the wealthiest men in the antebellum South. Considered a miser during his lifetime, but a generous philanthropist after death, Miller's educational endowments today help support the University of Virginia and the The Miller School of Albemarle. Found in 1878, the Miller Manual Labor School of Albemarle was a pioneer in combining the value of hands on labor with a liberal arts education.
