- 1811 – The Virginia General Assembly authorized the Rivanna Navigation Company to improve navigation along the Rivanna River "from the town of Columbia, in the county of Fluvanna, to the town of Milton, in the county of Albemarle".
- 1820 – First edition of The Central Gazette published. Established by brothers Clement Pynes McKennie and John Harris McKennie, it was Charlottesville’s first newspaper. This weekly paper ceased publication in July of 1827.
