- 1803 – President Thomas Jefferson sent a secret message to Congress asking for $2,500 to fund the Lewis & Clark expedition.
- 1863 – Published weekly from 1835 to 1862 in Charlottesville, Va. by James Alexander, the Jefferson Republican newspaper suspended publication because of war conditions - it did not resume publication until 1873.
- 2010 – Personally funded by UVA alum and film director Tom Shadyac, The Haven at First & Market homeless shelter opened its doors in the renovated First Christian Church.
