- 1870 – Local merchants Isaac Leterman and Bernard Oberdorfer, in their capacity as trustees of the Charlottesville Hebrew Benevolent Society, completed the purchase of property to serve as a Jewish cemetery, later known as the Hebrew Cemetery.
- 1964 – John Paul Jr., a retired federal judge who issued one of the earliest school desegregation orders in Virginia, died in his sleep at his home in Harrisonburg, Va. He was 80 years old. Judge Paul's historic decision, that the Charlottesville public schools end segregation, was made on August 7, 1956.
