  • 1803 – US Senate approves Thomas Jefferson's nomination of James Monroe and Robert Livingstone to negotiate purchase of New Orleans from France.
  • 1895 – The Charlottesville City & Suburban Railway Company began operating Charlottesville's first electric streetcar; more than 2,000 fares were collected in the first two days of regular operation. The city's population was just over 6,000.
  • 1901 – Engineer William Herbert McCartney is killed in the wreck of a Chesapeake and Ohio train in the Alberene branch of the James River Division in Albemarle Count.
  • 2024 – Ground is broken for Piedmont Housing Alliance's Hickory Hope apartments at Southwood that will feature 121 dwelling units.
