Strother Francis Hamm (March 15, 1890 - March 19, 1970) was a Charlottesville furniture store owner (Gilmore, Hamm and Snyder Furniture Company of Charlottesville) who was elected to City Council on June 8, 1948. [1] [2] He served as president of the council (mayor) from 1950 to 1952. [citation needed]

Hamm was a Democratic candidate for City Council in the April 6, 1948 primary. [3] He received the highest number of votes. [4] [5]
Hamm placed first in the 1948 election with 1,443 votes. [1]
Biography
Hamm was born on March 15, 1890[6] and died on March 19, 1970. His remains are located in Monticello Memorial Park. [7] He was an owner of a furniture store. [8] Hamm received the most votes with over 1,200 people casting a ballot for him. [9]
Burial: Monticello Memorial Park. Wife: Ruby Frances Barksdale Hamm (November 6, 1895 - December 4, 1965) (aged 70). Children: Ruby Elizabeth Hamm (February 18, 1922 - January 23, 2015); George Strother Hamm; James Douglas Hamm (Second Lieutenant, Army, WWII, Casualty Date: May 3, 1943, Died in: North Africa); Charles Edward Hamm; Dorothy Barksdale Hamm and Martha Frances Irion.
When he won the Democratic primary in 1948, he was operator of Gilmore, Hamm & Snyder. [9]
In February 1949, he told city fire fighters that city buildings were obsolete. [10]
Hamm was named as the first president of the Charlottesville Businessman's Association in October 1952. [11]
