History of Neighborhood

The St Clair Avenue neighborhood is located close to the Albemarle County border a little over half a mile where the Free Bridge crosses over the Rivanna river. During the 1900s most of the area surrounding the neighborhood was made up mostly of fields and livestock such as cows, who would have been found grazing in the area.[1] During the early 1900s one of the oldest buildings on the St Clair Avenue Street was the old farmhouse which was built around the 1920s[2] Later on the neighborhood would start to increase during the 1940s. Housing started to become more apparent around the time of the early 1950s.
