The Rutherford Institute is an Albemarle County-based non-profit organization "dedicated to the defense of civil liberties and human rights." The organization was founded in 1982 by John Whitehead. The group files lawsuits on behalf of individuals and organizations who have had their constitutional rights infringed upon in some way. The institute is named after Samuel Rutherford, a 17th century Scottish theologian who believed in the primacy of the law. In 2009, the Rutherford Institute received over 10,000 requests for assistance[1].
In December 2010, Rutherford filed suit against the Transportation Security Administration claiming that airport security procedures violate the fourth amendment[2].
