Barfield worked for the University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO) from May 2004 until March 1, 2010<ref name=cvillebrightman/>.
Immediately prior to her appointment to the clerk of council, Barfield served as the executive assistant to Chip Brightman, the CEO of UVIMCO<ref name=dpselects/>. Papers filed in Brightman's divorce proceedings alleged that Barfield "committed adultery on February 10 and 11, 2010 in Phoenix with Christopher Brightman" while the two were on a business-related trip<ref name=cvillebrightman/>.
