Ned Hocker (19131987) was the last full-time and year-round ferryman at Hatton’s Ferry.[1]

As a child, Hocker frequented the Hatton’s Ferry docks and befriended the operators. As a teenager, he began working on the ferry. At 17, he was officially hired as a full-time ferryman.[2] Hocker retired in 1982, after over fifty years of poling the ferry.[3] Hocker’s family had lived in the area for generations. His grandfather’s identity is unknown, but Hocker knew that he drove lead horses for the canal boats that crossed the James in the 1870s.[4]
