Nancy Hale Bowers

Nancy Hale Bowers (1908-1988) was the first woman hired as a reporter by the New York Times. A prolific writer, she first published articles in New York City magazines at the age of 20, and in 1934 was hired by the Times. She preferred writing novels and short stories, so decided to return to that kind of work. She moved to Charlottesville in 1936, and spent the rest of her life here. Bowers went on to earn several awards for her fiction writing, having published everything from short stories to novels and memoirs.
