Martha S. Carpenter

Martha "Patty" Stahr Carpenter (1920-2013) is a former radio astronomer at the University of Virginia who is the subject of a Frances Brand. [1]

Biography

Carpenter was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on May 29, 1920 to Henry Irvin Stahr and Alice Stockwell Stahr. She attended Wellesley College and received a B.S. in 1941 with a major in astronomy. She received her Masters and Ph.D in astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley. After teaching astronomy at both Wellesley and Cornell University, she came to the University of Virginia in 1968 where she taught until her retirement in 1985. [1]

While at Cornell, Carpenter was the first woman faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences. She became known her for her bibliographic work compiling radio astronomy research from around the world. [2]

She died on February 12, 2013.
