The Journey Through Hallowed Ground (JTHG) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to "raising national awareness of the unparalleled history in the region, which generally follows the Old Carolina Road (U.S. Route 15 and Virginia State Route 231) from Gettysburg, through Maryland, to Monticello in Albemarle County, VA." [citation needed]

In April 2008 the JTHG became the 38th National Heritage Area, passing the Senate by a vote of 31 to 4. [citation needed]

The JTHG is a National Scenic Byway, so designated in 2009[1]

In 2011 the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $1.3 million grant to JTHG to develop digital applications to highlight the route[1].
