John E. Baker was the first elected African-American to serve on the Albemarle County School Board or as that board's chair.
Biography
Baker was born on August 15, 1932 and grew up in Buffalo, New York. He moved to Charlottesville in 1971. After retiring from the United States Army in 1983, he became involved in local affairs and served as an appointed member of the county School Board. After his first wife died, he moved back to Buffalo and became vice president of Erie County Community College. Baker moved back to the county in 1991 after remarrying. He died on December 7, 2005. Baker was elected as the at-large member. Baker-Butler Elementary School is named after him. [1]
