Gustav Kenneth "Gus" Tebell (1897 – 1969) was a football, basketball, and baseball player, coach, and college athletics administrator in the first half of the twentieth century. He was a member of the Charlottesville City Council from 1946 to 1954. [1] In 1948, he was elected by the council to serve as president (mayor) of the Charlottesville City Council (1948-1950).
Following service on Council, Tebell served on the Charlottesville-Albemarle Joint Airport Commission. [2]
Univerity of Virginia
From 1934 to 1936, Tebell coached at the University of Virginia, where he compiled a 6–18–4 record. From 1930 to 1951, he served as the head men's basketball coach at UVA. In 1951 he became Athletic Director. Tebell also coached baseball at Virginia from 1941 to 1943 and from 1945 to 1955.

Civic career
1946 election
Tebell and Roscoe Adams were the winners in the 1946 election for two open seats on the City Council. [3]
1950 election
Tebell was the top vote-getter in the April 4, 1950 Democratic Primary. [4] He and William R. Hill were elected. [5]
Tebell was the lone vote against hiring James E. Bowen as the city manager in June 1948. [6]
Later life, death, and namesake
Gus Tebell Memorial Award
The University of Virginia honors Tebell by giving an annual award in his name, the Gus Tebell Memorial Award, which is granted each year to the graduating male student-athlete with the highest grade point average through his four years at the university.
