Republican Gunther "Dutch" Vogt served as Mayor of Charlottesville from 1968 to 1970. He was first elected to City Council in 1966.

Vogt told The Hook in 2006 that his most decisive vote came over a proposed merger with Albemarle County. While City Council was unanimous in its decision, Vogt said that Council did not do enough to sell the idea to the community, and a referendum failed[1].
