History

The name Greenwood comes from the name given to property owned by Isaac Hardin. After a railroad tunnel was built by Claudius Crozet, a railroad and a post office were built. In 1889, the Greenwood School was established by members of the community. [1]

It is home to the Greenwood Country Store, and the Greenwood Community Center[2], which has the area's only roller skating rink. Greenwood has a post office with ZIP code 22943.[3] It is also home to a 33-acre Superfund site. [4]

The community houses the ancestral burial ground of the family of the early Albemarle County inhabitant Joseph Kinkead. Reuben Gordon (1884–1949) was born and died in Greenwood, spending the majority of his life there. In 1895, the historic home known as Ramsay was built in Greenwood by William H. Langhorne.

Greenwood is part of the proposed Greenwood-Afton Historic District.
