Plaque about Free State community.jpg

Free State was a community of free African-American people located near what is now the Belvedere neighborhood in Albemarle County [1]. The land was purchased by Amy Bowles Farrow, a free African-American woman, in 1788. Her son Zachariah married Critta Hemings, Sally Hemings' sister. Many of the streets in the Belvedere neighborhood are named after the families of the residents of Free State. A cemetery with descendents of the Free State community is still intact (as well as signs with historical details), though most gravestones are missing. [citation needed]
