Fontaine Avenue Widening is the designation for a project to widen Fontaine Avenue to increase access to the University of Virginia's Fontaine Research Park. Originally proposed as a widening to three lanes, the most recent design, from September 2005, includes additional sidewalks and bike lanes and only calls for widening of the two-lane sections at two intersections. The project has been endorsed by the MPO Policy Board in the Transportation Improvement Program[1]. However, the project is currently deferred until 2018[citation needed].
Council hearings
In 2003, several people attended City Council meetings to protest the project[2]. At Council's meeting on May 19, 2003, neighborhood resident Kevin Kotlarski presented a petition against the project with 399 signatures[3]. Through these actions, the project's scope was reduced. The item is currently scheduled to be advertised for construction in 2018[citation needed].
