First Tee of the Virginia Blue Ridge

First Tee of the Virginia Blue Ridge provides an opportunity for area youth to learn about golf. The group received an official charter from the World Golf Foundation in August 2004 to establish the chapter. The group utilizes several area courses including the Birdwood Golf Course and Highland Golf Park. It is the successor organization to First Tee of Charlottesville. The executive director is Jin Ellington. [1]
Funding in doubt
The Charlottesville City Council reduced the funding for the organization in its proposed budget for FY2013. Many councilors such as Kathleen Galvin and Kristin Szakos say they are concerned the program does not attract enough city residents. [2] Albemarle provides no funding for the program despite a majority of participants are county residents. [3]
Karen Roberts Memorial Fund for Girls
This fund was set up in May 2010 upon the passing of Karen G. Roberts, an active volunteer for the chapter since 2006. On November 15, 2010, City Council accepted and appropriated $1,430 hat had been received by the city parks and recreation department[4].
