Dr. Eugene Dickerson (1877-1955), the only colored physician at the prosperous little city of Harrisonburg, he was a native of the old university town of Charlottesville, where he was born on August 1, 1877.

His parents were Wilson and Fannie Dickerson, his mother having been Miss Reeves, before her marriage.

After two years in Charlottesville's Jefferson High School, he matriculated at the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute at Petersburg and after completing preparatory courses entered college course, which was completed with the A. B. degree in 1896. He entered Leonard Medical College, Raleigh, N. C., where he won his M. D. degree in 1900. He completed post graduate work at Howard University, where he specialized in gynecology and spent twelve months as interne at the Freedman’s Hospital, Washington. He also held a medical student’s certificate issued by the regents of the University of New York.

In politics, Dr. Dickerson was a Republican and was a delegate to the Virginia State Republican Convention in Roanoke in 1920. He was an active member of the Baptist Church. Among the secret and benevolent orders, he was identified with the Pythians and Masons. During WW1 he volunteered in the M. R. C. [1][2]
