Dark Sky ordinances refer to provisions in zoning codes that seek to limit light pollution.

Albemarle County

  • September 4, 1996 – Board of Supervisors adopts resolution of intent to amend zoning code to address outdoor lighting [1]
  • October 15, 1996 – Planning Commission holds work session on ordinance with members of the Chamber of Commerce
  • January 1997 – General Assembly considers enabling authority to allow pursuit of a lighting ordinance [citation needed]
  • June 10, 1998 – Board of Supervisors holds public hearing
  • August 12, 1998 – Board of Supervisors adopts amendment to zoning code adding section on outdoor lighting
