Dairy Market is a mixed-use development overseen by Stony Point Development Group on the site of the former Monticello Dairy building. Two phases have been completed and a third has been announced. [1]

The former Monticello Dairy Building is one of Charlottesville's individually protected properties, meaning any exterior changes or potential demolition would have to be approved by the Board of Architectural Review. The building is located at 946 Grady Avenue, but only part of the structure is protected. [2]

The project will have 50,000 square feet of office space, 30,000 square feet of retail space and around 180 apartments. [3]

History

The original building was constructed in 1937 and was designed by Elmer Burruss.

Initial redevelopment

After its use as a dairy ended[when?], the building was subdivided into many sections and rented out to various businesses.

One of them was Harvest Moon Catering. [4]

21st century redevelopment

Stony Point Development Group has redeveloped the building in several phases. A third phase was announced in the summer of 2023 and this was received with an outcry from many. City Manager Sam Sanders said he would intervene to create a community benefits package as part of any city approval. [5]
