The Charlottesville Department of Social Services is one of 120 local departments in Virginia's state-supervised, locally-administered public social services system. The Department is an agency of city government which administers federal, state, and local public assistance and social work service programs[1].

Referrals for child protective services increased 6.73 percent between FY15 and FY 16. In the first months of FY17, caseloads for foster care prevention increased 21 percent, foster care by 16 percent and adult protective service cases increased by 13 percent. The state budget for FY18 allocated an additional $82,694 to the department and the department will hire an additional full-time person that year to deal with the extra work. [2]

Consolidation

Charlottesville and Albemarle County periodically bring up the topic of consolidating the two localities' social services departments. In February 2011, a committee made up of members from across the community concluded that merging the two departments would not save any money. [3]
