The Patricia Ann Byrom Forest Preserve Park is a 600-acre park in northwestern Albemarle County[1] which was dedicated and opened to the public in August 2011.[2]

Location

The park is located off Blackwells Hollow Road (County 810) in northwestern Albemarle County.

History

The Patricia Ann Byrom Forest Preserve Park was accepted into the Albemarle County Parks and Recreation Department by the Board of Supervisors at their meeting on July 2, 2008. The nearly 600 acres of land for Byrom Park was donated in 2004 by Robert Byrom, in honor of his wife. Byrom Park is the largest park in Albemarle County's park system.[3]

Improvements

2011 trail map

The park includes trails for trails for hiking, running, mountain biking and horseback riding. $612,513 was allocated in the 2008 capital improvements program budget to close existing unsafe trails, establish park accesses, and otherwise prepare the parks for public use.

Monument

Byrom Park contains a monument built by the Albemarle Blue Ridge Heritage Project to honor families displaced by the creation of Shenandoah National Park in the 1930s. The monument, built in 2016, is a non-functioning stone chimney adorned with a plaque listing the names of the families from Albemarle County.[4]

Bioblitz

On May 1, 2010 the county's Natural Heritage Committee worked with park officials and amateur naturalists and historians to conduct an inventory of the park. Over 60 people attended the event[5].
