As part of the Places29 Master Plan, Albemarle County is considering the northward extension of Berkmar Drive over the South Fork of the Rivanna River to as far as the North Fork of the Rivanna. The idea behind the road is to build a parallel road to U.S. 29 in order to provide more options to local traffic.
The project is currently on the MPO Policy Board's Transportation Improvement Program as an illustrative transportation project, which means that funding from the state or federal government is not likely for the foreseeable future. The project is not likely going to be built without significant contributions from the private sector[1].
