The Avon Street Landfill was used by Charlottesville, Albemarle, and the University of Virginia. It was closed in 1975.[study 1]

A businessman named Randell W. Barnett sought a rezoning of the land from agricultural to industrial in 1978, a request granted by the Board of Supervisors in 1978. Barnett wanted to open a farm implement store. [1]

A new road called the Bent Creek Parkway has been proposed to traverse part of the old landfill as a component of the Fifth Street and Avon Center project. This road will connect Avon Road and Fifth Street.
