The Albemarle Soaring Club was established in 1958 when its 5 founding members started acquiring sail planes. After refurbishing the used planes, the club conducted sucessful tests in September 1959. The club conducted its first "aero tows" at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport in March 1960.

Charter members included Dr. Zippe (instructor), Don Reid (president); Hans Gerstl (founder); Warren Hall (tow pilot); and Buddy Lewis (tow pilot).[1]
