The African American Jefferson Graded School was constructed in 1894 on Fourth Street NW, between Brown and Commerce Street. It originally included grades one through six. Grades seven and eight were added later. African American high school students attended schools outside of the area until the construction of the Jefferson High School in 1925.[1]
