The Virginia Department of Transportation helped oversee a $51 million project to widen U.S. 29 from Polo Grounds Road to Hollymead Town Center to six lanes. [1] [2] A design-build contract was awarded to the Lane / Corman Joint Venture in February 2015. The project is one of the Route 29 Solutions and a notice to proceed was granted in March 2015. [3] It is the subject of a lawsuit.

Background

The project was originally approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board in July 2012 at the same meeting in which $197.4 million in additional funds were allocated to the Western Bypass of U.S. 29. The CTB added additional money to the project in June 2014 when the bypass was defunded. [4]

The project became part of the design build contract for three projects recommended by Philip Shucet as part of the Route 29 Advisory Panel and overseen by the Route 29 Project Delivery Advisory Panel.

This project had been called for in the Places29 Master Plan.
