Events
- January 1 – Albemarle County entered into a partnership with Local Energy Alliance Program and Albemarle Housing Improvement Program where the county would fund $250,000 in retrofits for existing county homes to increase energy efficiency. This is a program that came out of Albemarle's Climate Action Plan. [1]
- January 5 – 6 p.m., the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s safety committee meeting to discuss finalizing a policy to govern its use of surveillance cameras before sending it out for public comment. The CRHA safety committee has held several meetings since Dre’Shawn Rayvon McDonald was killed last November.
- January 7 – Charlottesville Deputy City Manager Letitia Shelton announces her resignation [2]
- January 13 – Covid-19: Effective this Wednesday, the The University of Virginia Health System once again restricted visitors and guests at the hospital, or at clinic appointments, due to rising COVID cases.[3] In the early weeks of the pandemic, the medical center implemented a similar restriction, which was relaxed as conditions improved.
- January 14 – City Council issued an announcement that John Blair, Acting City Manager and City Attorney, will be leaving the City of Charlottesville effective March 5, 2021 having accepted a position as City Attorney in the City of Staunton. Chip Boyles has agreed to join the organization as City Manager. Council anticipates "launching a public search process for hiring a City Manager, likely in 2022."
- January 18 – Covid-19: Beginning this Monday, the Blue Ridge Health District will expand vaccination to “Phase 1b” priority groups at closed “point of dispensing” (POD) COVID-19 vaccination clinics. Phase 1b is the second group eligible to receive the vaccine. Additional PODs for Phase 1a are scheduled to continue vaccinating Phase 1a individuals while opening to vaccinate Phase 1b. [4]
- January 19 – City Council meeting included December the city is forecasting operating with a budget roughly $10M less than when it was adopted. Acting City Manager John Blair noted the situation could get better if the Biden Administration and Democratic-controlled Congress delivers on more relief. The city is operating on a $191.2 million budget for fiscal 2021, which started July 1, 2020.
- January 20 – Albemarle Board of Supervisors fails to approve rezoning for Breezy Hill neighborhood [5]
- January 21 – BRHD shares update on COVID-19 vaccination plans, vaccine shortage, and distribution to Phase 1A and 1B. At this point, the demand for vaccines in BRHD District far exceeds the current supply. BRHD will receive 2,950 doses of COVID-19 vaccinations every week for the next four weeks.
- January 27 – this date set for 2021 Point-in-Time (PIT) count, with a backup date of January 28. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and consideration of safety and workload concerns, HUD has allowed communities to make changes in the execution of both the sheltered and unsheltered January 2021 Point-in-Time (PIT) count.[6]
- February 12 – on this Friday, City Attorney John Blair, will finishes his final day as acting city manager.[7][8]
- February 19 – last day for Charlottesville Deputy City Manager Letitia Shelton who announces her resignation on January 7.[9]
- February 15 – on this Monday, Chip Boyles will become the next city manager.[10]
- March 5 – City Attorney John Blair will be leaving the City of Charlottesville, having accepted a position as city attorney in the City of Staunton.[11]
- March 14 – Start of Sunshine Week, ends on March 20. This event occurs each year in mid-March, coinciding with James Madison's birthday and National Freedom of Information Day on March 16th. Established in March 2005.

Election 2021
- January 11 – Charlottesville School Board member Juandiego Wade announces candidacy for City Council [12] [13] [14]
- April 15 – Deadline for first of eight Campaign Finance Reports for Candidate Committee Whose Office is on the Ballot on November 2, 2021.
- November 8 – local elections in the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
