- January 1 – A man wearing a mask shot a gun into the bar at 11 Elliewood Avenue just after midnight, injuring one [1]
- January 2 – A fire forces the evacuation of 1000 Research Park at the University of Virginia Research Park [2]
- January 6 – Charlottesville City Council approves special use permit and a critical slopes waiver for the second phase of South First Street [3]
- January 15 – Deed recorded in Albemarle County court for conservation easement for 1,150 acreas at Morven Farms [4]
February
- February 11 – Charlottesville Planning Commission votes 6-1 that Barracks Road and Emmet Street improvements project is compliant with the city's Comprehensive Plan [5]
- February 18 – Albemarle County Planning Commission recommends approval of pavilion building for Tandem Friends School [6]
- February 19 – County Executive Jeffrey Richardson unveils $451 million recommended budget for FY2021, a slight decrease from adopted FY2020 budget. This delays for one year an anticipated 1.5 cent rate increase to pay for additional debt service [7]
- February 19 – Albemarle County Board of Supervisors approves ordinance banning dogs from running without a leash on other people's property [8]
- February 20 – Charlottesville School Board voted to adopt $92.1 million funding request for FY2021 [9]

March
- March 2 – Charlottesville City Manager Tarron Richardson presented his $196.6 million operating budget and $35.3 million capital improvement program budget to City Council meeting. Public safety employees appeared during the matters from the public section to lobby for more funding. [14]
- March 3 – 2020 March Democratic Presidential Primary: Virginia, one of 14 states, held primaries on this day, also known as "Super Tuesday." Former Vice President Joe Biden won all but three localities in Virginia. Floyd County in the far Southwest and the cities of Harrisonburg and Charlottesville went for Bernie Sanders. The Democratic primary was open, meaning all registered voters could vote in the party primary regardless of the their own party affiliation. The Republican Party voted to cancel its primary.
- March 12 – In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Albemarle County and Charlottesville declared local emergencies in order to help coordinate public safety efforts to contain the spread of the disease. This gives officials more flexibility to conduct business. It resulted in the temporary halt of public meetings as well as the delay of the adoption of the FY21 budget in Albemarle County. [16] [17]
- March 12 – A fire broke out at Mallside Forest Apartments [18] [19]
- March 13 – Governor Ralph Northam today ordered all K-12 schools in Virginia to close for a minimum of two weeks in response to the continued spread of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.[20]
- March 15 – A Facebook post on restaurant Rapture’s page said it will be “closing its doors indefinitely...after over 21 years on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.” [21]
- March 17 – Beginning this day, Charlottesville City Schools will provide combined breakfast and lunch bags to children up to the age of 18. The Monday/Wednesday deliveries will be available from the hours of 11am-noon at locations throughout the city. Families can go to the location that is closest to them. Parents are not required to be present in order for their child to receive a bag, but it is helpful since children will be carrying multiple days’ worth of food — students are encouraged to bring an adult or at least a backpack. [22] [23]
- March 24 – Governor Ralph Northam signed Executive Order Fifty-Three which bans crowds of more than 10 people; closes recreation, entertainment, and personal care businesses; and limits restaurants to offering takeout and delivery services only.
- March 31 – The first COVID-19 fatality in the Thomas Jefferson Health District was reported [25]
April
- April 7 – Steering committee for Charlottesville Comprehensive Plan meets via Zoom Video Communications (Zoom) teleconference (Agenda).
- April 7 – Virginia Announces Changes in Unemployment Insurance program as a result of the Federal CARES Act. The CARES Act provides increased benefits for workers collecting unemployment insurance by $600 for claims effective March 29th until July 31st.[26] The Act expands eligibility for unemployment insurance and provides people with an additional $600 per week on top of the unemployment amount determined by each state. Currently the maximum weekly benefit amount is $378 and the minimum is $60. [27] Virginia's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour ($290 a week is the pay before taxes for an employee who works 40 hours a week at $7.25 an hour; $600 a week is the pay before taxes for an employee who works 40 hours a week at $15 an hour, or 30 hours a week at $20 an hour.)
- April 14 – Governor Ralph Northam, in partnership with researchers from the University of Virginia’s Biocomplexity Institute and the nonprofit RAND Corporation, released new infectious disease modeling on the impact of COVID-19 mitigations in Virginia.[28]
- April 15 – Governor Ralph Northam today announced that he will extend Executive Order Fifty-Three for two weeks, through May 8, 2020. - April 20 – The Downtown Grille announced on the company's Facebook page: "With heavy hearts, we have decided to cease operations on the historic downtown mall. The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented economic hardship, and we feel that closing the restaurant permanently is the best way to move forward."[30]

- June 12 – Albemarle County School Board issues statement stating they would re-examine the relationship with the Albemarle County Police Department regarding school resource officers in the wake of anti-racist protests [40]
- June 13 – Monticello re-opens under new health protocols as COVID-19 Emergency continued. [41]
- June 13 – Bob Good becomes Republican nominee for the 5th Congressional District of Virginia after defeating incumbent Denver Riggleman in a drive-thru convention held at the Tree of Life Ministries in Campbell County on June 13, 2020. There were 2,437 delegates and Good won 58 percent of the vote. [42] [43]
- June 30 – Anticipated completion date for the Blue Ridge Tunnel [44]
July
- July 1 – Cale Elementary School will become known as Mountain View Elementary [45]

- 2020 – 2020 Unity Days: Unity Days events will occur primarily during August 1 through 12, 2020. Charlottesville City Council (2018-2019) designated the second weekend of August (and August 12 when it falls during the week) for the annual Unity Days events as the anniversary of the events of August 11 to 12, 2017. - October 13 – November General Election: Deadline to register to vote, or update an existing registration.[48]
- October 26 – Trial is set for lawsuit against groups and individuals who organized the Unite the Right rally in August 2017. [49]

Deaths
- March 23 – David P. Bowerman, local business owner, active in politics; serving 10 years on the Albemarle County Planning Commission and 16 years on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors representing the Rio District. At the time of his death, he served as a member of the Albemarle County Board of Zoning Appeals.[51]
