The general election will be held on November 5, 2013, in which voters will select three members of the [[Albemarle County]] [[Board of Supervisors]], three members of the [[Albemarle County School Board]], two members of the [[Charlottesville City Council]] and three members of the [[Charlottesville School Board]]. Jack Jouett District

Board of Supervisors

On April 3, 2013, Dennis Rooker announced he would not seek a fourth term for the Jack Jouett Magisterial District. Instead, he endorsed fellow independent Diantha McKeel.[3]

McKeel faced fellow independent Phillip Seay in the general election.[4]

Katherine Lee Acuff filed her candidacy papers for Diantha McKeel's open seat the week of June 3, 2013.[5] She won in an uncontested race.

Board of Supervisors

Rodney Thomas announced on December 5, 2012 that he will run for a second-term. Brad Sheffield, assistant director of JAUNT, announced he would seek the Democratic nomination on April 23, 2013.[6] Sheffield defeated Thomas. [1]

Duane Snow announced his candidacy for a second term on February 27, 2013.[7]

There was a special election to fill the vacancy left when Chris Dumler resigned his seat after pleaing to a misdemenaor sexual battery charge. Cynthia Burket was the Republican nominee. [9] Jane Dittmar was the Democrat. [10]

Charlottesville

There are two City Council seats and three school board seats up for re-election. There will also be elections for City Treasurer and Commissioner of Revenue.

City Council

The Charlottesville City Council seats held by Dave Norris and Kristin Szakos were up for reelection. Szakos won re-election, and Bob Fenwick won election after two unsuccessful runs by an independent. [2]

Norris did not seeking a third term.[11] [12]

The Charlottesville Democratic Committee chose its nominees during a statewide primary on June 11, 2013.[13]

  • Szakos announced her candidacy for a second term on February 14, 2013.[14] At the time, she was introduced by Wes Bellamy, who said he would not be a candidate.
  • Wes Bellamy changed his mind and announced his decision to run on March 13, 2013.[15]
  • Bob Fenwick, a former Republican who ran as independent in 2009 and 2011, ran as a Democrat in the spring of 2013.[16]

The two other Democratic candidates for the June 11 primary were:

Szakos placed first in the primary with 1,370 votes, or 29 percent of the vote. Fenwick and Szakos tied with 1,088 votes apiece and count of provisional ballots was due to be completed by Friday, June 14, 2013.[19] Fenwick edged Bellamy by five votes when the provisional ballots were counted.[20]

Republican resurgence

On April 25, 2013, retiring police sergeant Mike Farruggio and attorney Buddy Weber announced they will run as Republicans. This will be the first time the party has run multiple candidates since 2000.[21]

School Board

No Charlottesville School Board races are contested. Up for re-election are Juandiego Wade, Leah Puryear, and Ned Michie.

Other races

Special election for treasurer

Judge Edward Hogshire ruled that the city must hold a special election for treasure and it was held on April 2, 2013.[24] The Charlottesville Democratic Committee has chosen to hold a firehouse primary to choose its nominee.[13] Jason Vandever defeated John Pfaltz with 75 percent of the vote.[25]

Commissioner of Revenue

Two Democrats sought the nomination to succeed Lee Richards as commissioner of the revenue. Jonathan Stevens and Todd Divers were the two candidates vying to be the winner in the June primary.[12] Divers defeated Stevens.[26]
