Elections for Charlottesville City Council were held in 1948. Three of five seats up for election. The general election was held on
Democratic Primary
Fred L. Watson announced in late January he would not seek re-election. [1]
The total registration for the primary was 6,587 voters. [2]
The League of Women Voters canceled a scheduled pre-primary forum in April due to a lack of interest from candidates. [3]
The seven candidates for the April 6 primary were: [4]
- W.T. Barnett
- Harry J. Brown
- B.A. Coles
- Frank D. Daniel
- Thomas W. Etheridge
- Henry A. Haden
- Strother Hamm
The Daily Progress reported that the primary season was "unusually quiet" despite the large field. The newspaper also reported low turn-out on the day of the primary. [5]
Over 2,000 voted in the primary. Hamm, Haden and Brown were the top three vote-getters. Etheridge placed fourth, followed by Daniel, Coles and Barnett. [6] [7]
The Daily Progress lamented in an editorial about the low-turn out and pointed out that the winners of the Democratic primary tended to be elected in the general election. [8]
General Election
Republican James Barr III ran as an independent. [9]
